why me?
(me. not-so-patiently waiting.)

the past few days have been some harrowing, painful ones. let me explain. for some reason, i keep being subjected to and surviving the most random of ailments. it all started about two years ago when i was restfully sleeping and woke up to an itchy left hand, that sensation and weird looking rash also spread to my legs. hives. the allergist has yet to pinpoint what i'm allergic to.
six months later, after dancing the night away at a friends homecoming party in Philly, i was resting the next afternoon to awake to shooting pain in my right foot. i thought that was weird, but it passed so i went back to sleep. later on in the evening my ankle had swollen to resemble a 'cankle' and i was rushed to the ER in the middle of the night. i got many diagnoses ranging from twisted it while dancing...to an allergic reaction from an insect bite. i wobbled around in a therapeutic boot while hopped up on anti inflammatory and pain meds for weeks.
last month, after the news of the epidemic swine flu had just broken, i was at work feeling quite odd: fever, chills, and sore throat. i was certain i was close to death because i had just started taking public transportation leaving me easily susceptible to all these infectious diseases. it was tonsillitis.
(dr GQ's handiwork..)
this week, i manged to get an infection in my finger. again, no clue how. i sought medical attention after realizing the swelling or pain wasnt going away. my doctor..lets call her Dr. Gupta, assured me it was a simple procedure of making a small incision to deflate the swelling. Dr. Gupta...smh. you know you should be worried when your doctor says, "well, maybe..." after the procedure has already begun. she failed to treat me correctly and i had to be seen twice in the days following. FINALLY, Dr. GQ (thats what we're calling him. my mom was impressed because he was surprisingly black and young!) swooped in and properly treated me!
typing has been difficult as you can imagine so i'll close with shoutouts to the staff at Patient First...hopefully, you wont be seeing much more of me.

i carry your heart with me
if any of you have seen that wedding scene from In Her Shoes..or follow American poetry, then you may know this one:
written by e.e. cummings, 'i carry your heart with me' is now one of my new favourite poems (i realize i'm probably a little late on this, but im discovering!). i'm not usually one for the mushy-mush, but i can appreciate this poem because of two things: 1) it reads like a song..this could easily be spun into a radio-ready R&B hit and 2) the writer expresses a bold honesty in their feelings that i like. at first i thought it had a sadness to it, but now i realize he's just...declaring his love. here's to not caring what you feel.
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

treasury
i went to the grand opening of Treasury over the weekend. inside, there was a great vibe with free saki (!!!), a dj, and by mid afternoon--lots of seemingly eager shoppers. the store had really great pieces that could be incorporated into anyone's wardrobe; both understated and funky jewelry, shift dresses, and lace tops similar to this Balmain piece made popular by Rihanna since photographed wearing.

(via Rihanna Daily)
there were lots of vintage finds sourced from estate sales and the like. looking at the items, you really do feel like each is a discovered treasure. no mass produced items here:

caribbean parade 2009

*re-up*: dc carnival
This week has been an interesting one so far: its caribbean week here in D.C., which always ends with the parade on Georgia Avenue. (see my experience from last year below) Alison Hinds will be performing at Crossroads for yet, another year--they just love her over here!
Lets see...trains collided. and not just in my mind...literally. its hard not to think about it; pretend it doesnt affect when i have to take the trains to work daily. the morning after, riders looked so dazed and confused. hopefully this will spotlight whatever problems the Metro system has. this weekend should look up! might check out a sound clash on friday to prepare for the parade. have to love live music...i hear it will be all vinyl.
pics of the weekend to come. in the mean time...*not thinking about train crash*...

As an islander, i fulfilled my obligatory duty to "get on bad" at DC Carnival 2008. I love that people of all races and nationalities feel welcome to participate. thats exactly what Caribbean people embody, really. history tells it.
I took my little brother, J because he's the most americanized immigrant little boy i know. I'm trying desperately to get him to soak up some culture. he wasn't ready:
all in all it was a great event. i wondered though, right after the parade was done (and i do mean two secs after), why the street cleaners were so intent on cleaning the road. not that i'm complaining, but Georgia Avenue never got a wash down like that before. you could've mistook it for a street in Canada.
and i'm not a huge fan of Soca, but this one gets girls moving every time:

"does the new I-phone have a pregnancy test app?"
as if we weren't already inundated with ridiculously inappropriate text messages! TextsFromLastNight provide a cute little site for you to send messages for the entire world to share in your infamy. we've all been there. you know you've gotten one of those messages when your facial expression is way more expressive and animated because the sender isnt nearby.
the Worst Nights of All Time section is especially funny..had me rolling!
*title of post is derived from a text submitted on TFLN. not an actual question from me. no rumors please!*

so...maybe its me?
im annoyed. constantly...i've mentioned that before, im sure. several things:
- unreturned phone calls.
especially when you know the non-caller isnt busy. or dead.
especially when you know the non-caller isnt busy. or dead.
- serial texters.
some times its REALLY inappropriate. stop using texts as a crutch!
- phone charges.
what is the actual cost of a phone call? or text message?? cell phone companies make too much money.
*sensing a theme yet? *
- people who lie.
people who dont think omissions qualify as lying. what is that about?!?!
- people who flake.
you know you're not doing/going to that. why act like it??
- ignorance.
people with small minds and views of the world..you have no excuse! read a damn book.
- traffic/travel time.
why cant we transport/move faster yet?
- actively dating (while single).
the entire song and dance grates my nerves! most people dont know how to do it right anyway...
- slow internet!!!
- small talk.
empty, and pointless.
and i encounter a few of these categories very regularly. help is needed. i feel like this poor little girl all the time:

bumcast
im so annoyed. everything annoys me these days! maybe its me, though. lauren's recent experience with her cell phone service provider reminds me of mine a lot! this is just one of my grievances these days...currently i'm using a satellite connection to get by. and i just. get. by. only because its the only provider thats worked in my neck of the woods before. its costly, slow, and annoying (did i mention that already??).
i decided to call Comcast recently because I heard a few (admittedly, distant) neighbors use their service for a connection. the following is a loose reenactment/documentation:
i decided to call Comcast recently because I heard a few (admittedly, distant) neighbors use their service for a connection. the following is a loose reenactment/documentation:
- may 4th: called Comcast, and spoke with a customer service rep re-possible internet service. spoke with a nice sounding lady who seemed knowledgeable about my remote location, the connection issues and service area. she took my home address and contact info and said i would be contacted within 7-10 business days.
- may 11th: was home all week and didnt notice any service men around my yard. called Comcast to follow up on my service request. There was NO RECORD of my request. Wished I had gotten the name and ID# of the rep I had spoken with. Resubmitted my request for survey of my home.
- may 18: no update to my request. was informed that survey requests actually take up to 4 weeks. by this point i want to call Verizon and ask what they can do for me, but I know they cant do anything for me in my location.
- june 3rd: STILL no update. i expressed my utter dissatisfaction with the customer service. i realize my situation is slightly difficult because of the need for a survey...but DAMN! its been a month now!! the rep replied flatly to check back in two more weeks.

Chillin!
everyone who's close to me knows...musically, i brought a little bit of DC with me when i got back to Jamaica. i support underground music and have followed Wale's career from its early stages. he's now pretty much mainstream (which means i'll have to move on! haha). his latest video features Lady GaGa:
kinna cool when you recognize faces, landmarks, and streets on a big budget vid. i've been playing this song for months and didnt realize how looped/repetitive Lady's verse is until the video.

30 days
today makes it a month that i've been back in the States from my trip. the same trip that i prepared and stressed over for months. the very same trip that while on it, i refused to blog! haha
people keep asking how my visit was, and SO much happened. it was great, i dont regret going at all. one of those experiences that i had to go through myself. im not sure I could sum it up correctly if i tried. Kingston is a lot like D.C. in many ways, but there are also huge differences. somehow, my mind lives somewhere in between. which i suppose is fitting, because i'm so conflicting myself. I just can't wait to go back!
already, a lot of positive, progressive things have happened in this month that i'm really excited about. it blows my mind that we're halfway through the year already! i feel like it was just christmas! so here's to the rest of the year...i swear i'll be keeping my fingers crossed the entire time.
and a look at the time spent:

its been a MIGHTY long time!
woke up feeling slightly inspired and driven this morning. in response to this rarity, and the recent changes in my personal life, i've decided to revamp my blog! special thanks to artsy bee for the not-so-subtle reminders of my slacking and general lameness..♥
changes to come--and i like it!

the process
its been a little over a month since my big move.
i knew going into the situation that it would be a process.
the logistics of where to settle myself physically was a back and forth dance.
i knew that nothing would happen overnight. i lied to myself.
that's only partially true.
almost overnight, i feel as though a lot has changed. like the role i now play in my social circles. and yet still some things haven't changed at all. like the fact that i'm still unemployed.
there's still so much to do.
excuse me while i unpack some more...
