*re-up*: dc carnival

This week has been an interesting one so far: its caribbean week here in D.C., which always ends with the parade on Georgia Avenue. (see my experience from last year below) Alison Hinds will be performing at Crossroads for yet, another year--they just love her over here!

Lets see...trains collided. and not just in my mind...literally. its hard not to think about it; pretend it doesnt affect when i have to take the trains to work daily. the morning after, riders looked so dazed and confused. hopefully this will spotlight whatever problems the Metro system has. this weekend should look up! might check out a sound clash on friday to prepare for the parade. have to love live music...i hear it will be all vinyl.

As an islander, i fulfilled my obligatory duty to "get on bad" at DC Carnival 2008. I love that people of all races and nationalities feel welcome to participate. thats exactly what Caribbean people embody, really. history tells it.

I took my little brother, J because he's the most americanized immigrant little boy i know. I'm trying desperately to get him to soak up some culture. he wasn't ready:

all in all it was a great event. i wondered though, right after the parade was done (and i do mean two secs after), why the street cleaners were so intent on cleaning the road. not that i'm complaining, but Georgia Avenue never got a wash down like that before. you could've mistook it for a street in Canada.

and i'm not a huge fan of Soca, but this one gets girls moving every time:

its the little things that will motivate and inspire. swiped a bottle of this stuff from Ki, when she came to visit last. would've preferred it to be more bright/vivid but this works too. sure kept me awake during my staff meeting today!

as if we weren't already inundated with ridiculously inappropriate text messages! TextsFromLastNight provide a cute little site for you to send messages for the entire world to share in your infamy. we've all been there. you know you've gotten one of those messages when your facial expression is way more expressive and animated because the sender isnt nearby.

the Worst Nights of All Time section is especially funny..had me rolling!

so...maybe its me?

im annoyed. constantly...i've mentioned that before, im sure. several things:

- unreturned phone calls.
especially when you know the non-caller isnt busy. or dead.

- serial texters.

some times its REALLY inappropriate. stop using texts as a crutch!

- phone charges.

what is the actual cost of a phone call? or text message?? cell phone companies make too much money.

*sensing a theme yet? *

- people who lie.
people who dont think omissions qualify as lying. what is that about?!?!

- people who flake.
you know you're not doing/going to that. why act like it??

- ignorance.
people with small minds and views of the world..you have no excuse! read a damn book.

- traffic/travel time.
why cant we transport/move faster yet?

- actively dating (while single).
the entire song and dance grates my nerves! most people dont know how to do it right anyway...

- slow internet!!!

- small talk.
empty, and pointless.

and i encounter a few of these categories very regularly. help is needed. i feel like this poor little girl all the time:

im so annoyed. everything annoys me these days! maybe its me, though. lauren's recent experience with her cell phone service provider reminds me of mine a lot! this is just one of my grievances these days...currently i'm using a satellite connection to get by. and i just. get. by. only because its the only provider thats worked in my neck of the woods before. its costly, slow, and annoying (did i mention that already??).

i decided to call Comcast recently because I heard a few (admittedly, distant) neighbors use their service for a connection. the following is a loose reenactment/documentation:

• may 4th: called Comcast, and spoke with a customer service rep re-possible internet service. spoke with a nice sounding lady who seemed knowledgeable about my remote location, the connection issues and service area. she took my home address and contact info and said i would be contacted within 7-10 business days.
• may 11th: was home all week and didnt notice any service men around my yard. called Comcast to follow up on my service request. There was NO RECORD of my request. Wished I had gotten the name and ID# of the rep I had spoken with. Resubmitted my request for survey of my home.
• may 18: no update to my request. was informed that survey requests actually take up to 4 weeks. by this point i want to call Verizon and ask what they can do for me, but I know they cant do anything for me in my location.
• june 3rd: STILL no update. i expressed my utter dissatisfaction with the customer service. i realize my situation is slightly difficult because of the need for a survey...but DAMN! its been a month now!! the rep replied flatly to check back in two more weeks.
  

i'm just about over it, for real. its taking too much of my time and energy to monitor them..ugh.

everyone who's close to me knows...musically, i brought a little bit of DC with me when i got back to Jamaica. i support underground music and have followed Wale's career from its early stages. he's now pretty much mainstream (which means i'll have to move on! haha). his latest video features Lady GaGa:



kinna cool when you recognize faces, landmarks, and streets on a big budget vid. i've been playing this song for months and didnt realize how looped/repetitive Lady's verse is until the video.

30 days

today makes it a month that i've been back in the States from my trip. the same trip that i prepared and stressed over for months. the very same trip that while on it, i refused to blog! haha
people keep asking how my visit was, and SO much happened. it was great, i dont regret going at all. one of those experiences that i had to go through myself. im not sure I could sum it up correctly if i tried. Kingston is a lot like D.C. in many ways, but there are also huge differences. somehow, my mind lives somewhere in between. which i suppose is fitting, because i'm so conflicting myself. I just can't wait to go back!

already, a lot of positive, progressive things have happened in this month that i'm really excited about. it blows my mind that we're halfway through the year already! i feel like it was just christmas! so here's to the rest of the year...i swear i'll be keeping my fingers crossed the entire time.
